Orthography

On Saturday I burned my eyes out on Solebury’s microfiche tax records from the late 1820’s. I kept running across this name I couldn’t identify in the elaborate script of the era. Was it some weird shorthand for Jeffrey or Joseph? I felt like a total idiot when I realized it was my own name, written with a long S.
